MCX1 and MCX2 Texts and References
Intro to C++ programming and C++ classes
1. Programming with C++, 2nd
Edition, John Hubbard. McGraw-Hill, 2000. For
MCX1
ISBN: 0-07-1353461 In the Schaum's Outline
Series.
The same author's Fundamentals
of Computing with C++ in the Schaum's Outline
Series
isn't as helpful for the AP course!

2. Barron's AP Computer
Science, Roselyn Teukolsky. For
MCX1/MCX2
ISBN # 0-7641-0546-9. About $15. This is the least
expensive and apparently the best APCS review
book. Its first 11 chapters (343 pages) are dedicated to
reviewing APCS topics (including the
Marine biology case study). In addition to accompanying
explanations for free response solutions,
explanations for all multiple choice answers are also
provided.

3. Be Prepared for the AP Computer Science Exam, Skylight
Publishing, Maria Litvin. For MCX1/MCX2
ISBN # 0-965485366. About $16. This is less expensive than the 2nd
edition of Horwitz' review
book but seems to be of comparable quality.

6. Addison-Wesley's Review for the Computer Science AP Exam in
C++, 2nd Edition, Susan Horwitz. 2000.
ISBN # 0-201-702789. This seems to be of higher quality
than REA's Computer Science A and AB review
book. Neither book is a C++ text; they're exam preparation
guides. Hint: Use ISBN # if possible to distinguish this
edition (2nd edition) from the 1st
edition. For

7. C++ Primer, 3rd Edition, Stanley
Lippman and Josiee Lajoie. 1998. Not
a book for novices!! For MCX1/MCX2
This excellent reference is NOT what one would ordinarily
call a primer. It is a fairly advanced approach to
C++ syntax, presupposing a considerable background in C++
and in computer programming concepts.

8. Object-Oriented Programming in C++, 3rd Edition, Robert
Lafore. 1999. For MCX1
Of the 16 chapters, 11 are applicable to the concepts of
the first semester of of the APCS. The treatment of the
material seems to be clear, thoughtful, and practical.
