Summertime in Portland, Maine!!

There's been some talk here about whether we deserved this short wet summer, especially after going through a particularly long cold winter. But what can you do about the weather??

Let me show you what I did on my summer vacation. Scratch that. Let me show you what I did this summer in between going to my full time job in the Guitar Factory. The following pictures where all taken during July and August 2003 mostly in, but a few around, Portland, Maine, USA.

2422.jpg (28826 bytes) 2427.jpg (19618 bytes) Who would have thought that pictures of cars could be so exciting?
2443.jpg (33321 bytes) 2474.jpg (29581 bytes) Boys at the beach. The guy on the right is Mark Frasier, kite -buggier, -skier, -surfer, and -aerial photographer. We met that day so that I could get some shots of him surfing from the air--to no avail.
2518.jpg (8181 bytes) 2535.jpg (8446 bytes) There was a period this summer when Portland was socked in by fog every day for 2 weeks. I'm not kidding. On one of those days there was a nice breeze, and the temperature was in the 70's Fahrenheit, 20's Celsius. Of course I went kite flying on the Eastern Prom . . .
2547.jpg (20791 bytes) 2566.jpg (15274 bytes) . . . and I have the pictures to prove it! Most of the time I could not see the kite, and some of the time I could not see the camera rig. When I finally brought it down the rig was soaking wet. I'm not kidding.
2658.jpg (28912 bytes) 2713.jpg (31661 bytes) The North Street Community Garden. The first shot was taken with an overcast sky. I was going to pack up and go home, but I noticed a break in the clouds along the horizon. I left the kite up in the air, and waited 30 minutes or so for the second shot.

2907.jpg (32402 bytes) 3004.jpg (34723 bytes) End of Congress Street, Eastern Promenade. The first shot is from a hazy afternoon--a few minutes before a brief violent thunderstorm. The camera is pointing almost directly toward the sun. The second shot was taken on a clear bright morning one week later.

3172.jpg (44569 bytes) Is this a self-portrait or not? I'm having a problem with the radio on my camera rig. When it's close to the ground it goes haywire, jerking all about and snapping pictures by itself. This is one of them.
