The McLean Hilton, a 450 guestroom hotel, opened in 1986 in the heart
of Tyson's Corner, Virginia. Mr. Bass, while an Associate at Skidmore
Owings & Merrill, had served as Project Manager for the original construction.
The management then turned to us for the design of additional pre-function
space. Working in collaboration with the interior design firm of Elias
Design Group, within an extremely tight budget and on a very tight schedule,
we were able to bring the project to a successful opening in time for
the 1994 fall season.
The new pre-function area features a triangular skylight measuring 45'
on each side and a glass wall overlooking the existing landscaped area.
The large expanses of glass in the skylight and exterior wall, which admit
natural light, also help to unify the new and existing pre-function areas
and to reduce the apparent depth of the space. For evening use, hidden
cove lighting illuminates the ceilings, while decorative wall sconces
and a large custom chandelier add a touch of elegance and sparkle.
