The Appalachian Trail Caretaker Program is intended to improve the "A.T. experience" in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The A.T. caretaker program is run jointly by the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club (SMHC), Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the Appalachian Trail Conference (ATC). Caretakers must be approved by all three entities. A training session is provided. The Caretaker will backpack in to either the Icewater Spring, Russell Field, Silers Bald, or Tricorner Knob A.T. shelters, as assigned.
The caretaker will meet with Trail and shelter users and share appropriate information about Park regulations and proper Leave No Trace backcountry practices; perform maintenance on the A.T. and its side trails within 5 miles either side of the home shelter, including cleaning trail drainage, mowing and clipping, and small blowdown removal; maintain A.T. shelters and their privies, including simple basic cleaning and repairs, privy cleaning, and water source maintenance; monitor compliance with Park regulations and report any noncompliance (enforcement is not part of the job); and exhibit proper backcountry camping skills, including sanitation practices and removal of litter. Other related duties may be assigned by the supervisor. Written reports will be required of the caretaker.
