This is part of a two year project was to replace the Thelma Marks shelter on Cove Mountain near Duncannon PA. Site of an infamous double homicide some years ago. The replacement shelter was timber frame construction made from beams salvaged from old barns by the National Park Service. The timbers were over 100 yrs old at least and some appeared to have been salvaged by the farmers from previous buildings. The timber framers guild worked with MCM members for 6 days laying out, cutting, joining and erecting the frame. Monthly weekend work trips though summer finished the project. The new shelter is officially renamed as the Cove Mountain shelter.2001 This project was part of a reroute of the Continental Divide Trail around peak 9635 in New Mexico. The original trail followed the ridge line along the grazing boundry fence. It was very difficult travel with a long series of steep ascents and descents plus serious erosion problems in many places. There were lots of excellent views but after the 18th grand view at the top of a stiff scramble up a slope before 2pm and with miles to go, it was a bit much for the majority of hikers. Volunteer effort from a varitey of groups was coordinated by Tim Pholman to construct a 5 mile long, graded slope trail around the peak, connecting back at an overview. Construction is expected to take another 2 years with each week of work establishing another 1/4 mile of treadway.2002 Scapegoat Wilderness, Montana.
