I cannot breathe
For thinking of it
Then and now
How
Can you
Hold a visual image
And breathe
When I watched the planes
Hit the towers
Last Tuesday
Sight and emotions
Locked
Forming
A
Glottal
Stop

Natur Mort
Dead leaves
On still-green grass
Hard figs on leafless trees
To hear the rattle of death
When wind blows
From the East
I go out in the yard
My footsteps on the patio
Make a crunching sound
Strong wind
Rattles the leaves at night
This is the dry season
I go out in the yard
And poke among the bones
Brown leaves
Fallen from the Loquat
Dead grasses
Hanging seeds of Buckeye
Split Wisteria pods
I bring leaves and seeds
To the table and arrange them
Into a still life

EASTER
This sacred Sunday
We eat
A leg of baby lamb
Born this Christmas.
(Rosemary for Remembrance
Garlic against the Devil)
We boil
Slim asparagus,
Tiny potatoes,
Thin carrots.
There are
Lettuce leaves just picked,
Green onions,
Fertile hen's eggs
Dyed red for blood.
The dog outside
Gnaws the muddy bone.

CHILDHOOD
Nights so long
The minutes ticked in clocks
That was life in Pennsylvania

PENNSYLVANIA DREAM
The rain
Falls so softly
So long
So silently
It fills the Neshaminy Creek
So full
So deep
My sleep.
