Camden Whitehead received his BA degree from Averett College in 1976 with a major in Studio Art. At Averett, he received the C. L. Davenport Award for General Excellence. He received his Masters of Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in 1980. After practicing architecture with
several Richmond firms and becoming licensed as an architect, Mr. Whitehead joined the Faculty of the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University where he has taught or been a member of the administration for more than 20 years.

Camden's practice as an architect is characterized by work that is sensitive to the site, develops a strong conceptual link between site and program, and demonstrates a thoughtful, responsible use of materials. As an architect, Mr. Whitehead takes seriously his stewardship of the earth and its resources. His work is fundamental, celebrating the mundane and the humble. He mediates design solutions at a range of scales; from neighborhood planning to furniture design; from houses and additions to watercolors. His work includes over forty architectural commissions, over twenty shows and exhibitions and over twenty watercolor commissions.

Camden is active in public service, serving on the City of Richmond's Urban Design Committee and Public Arts Commission.  He has provided pro bono work to Saint Gertrude School, The Maggie L. Walker Governor's School, the Virginia Society AIA, the James River Park and the Midtown Planning Committee.
