Project: Fitt Porch, Richmond, Virginia Architect: Camden Whitehead Contractor: Jack Whitehead Photos: Christian Wildman Camden was hired to design an outdoor room that would give entry to this 1930s spec house. The client, an artist and businesswoman, wanted to define a porch and entry cover over the area of the existing entry stoop, a concrete platform with a brick veneer. As an avid gardener, the owner asked that Camden design the porch columns and roof structure to support vines and other plants. A gate was added to the existing railings so that the family Scottish Deerhounds could be confined to the porch while unleashed. The result of this program was a Western red cedar trellis supported on 2-1/2" diameter galvanized steel columns. The columns are independent of the existing concrete stoop. The existing porch roof brackets were retained to support the rear beam and to recall the original porch roof. The original stair and porch rail, were retained to keep costs down, and repainted with metallic paint. A low-sloped roof, sheathed with plywood and covered with corrugated galvanized steel panels, shelters the entry. |
