The Battle

As I step on the ice
I feel uncertain
Though I have been here a thousand times
it seems like the first
I start to stumble
like a small child
Doing battle with the ice
instead of working with it
Allowing myself to create
the artistry of this menagere
Losing my spirit
Frustration burns
magnifying the battle
Hate and anger are my handicapps
causing me to fall
Skating was my release
but today it is my captor
I fall again
The pain stings more in my heart than my hands
Then I find
I am not doing battle with the ice
I am doing battle with myself
