Separate changing rooms

Our Club has always had separate change rooms for the boys and girls. Due to circumstances beyond Club's control skaters shared a change room for a few months when arena was under construction and had to find alternate ice. Some girls coped by using public washrooms to change or running behind the shower area for some privacy to change. There were never more than 4 boys in our Club figure skating at the same time, and currently only 1. Now that we are "back to normal" it has been brought to the Board's attention that some of the girls are uncomfortable with a "shared" arrangement, and parents feel that it is inappropriate. If the boy were little it might not matter but this is not the case, we are talking about a teenager. I am aware that something has been said to the coach to deal with the situation, and something said to the skater, but the situation persists. Do the girls have any right to privacy when they change? It is not always practical to change at home before skating, but they still have to contend with changing for school for those early morning skates. Do the governing skating bodies have rules or guidelines for this type of situation? I am not the parent who brought the problem to the Board's attention, but I concur with the feeling that it is inappropriate. HELP! Concerned Mother

Linda says:
As a parent, I would expect to see separate changing/locker rooms for boys and girls at any age. I don't think the situation should be tolerated by any of the parents. If there is only one boy and space is an issue, perhaps a small space could be found for him. The issue should be brought before the board.
