Trying to find the time...

My 6-year-old daughter loves to skate, but my husband and I work full time, so we take her to a group class on Saturdays only. She takes private lessons on Fridays since my husband's work allows him to work 4 hours on Fridays. We'd like to hear from other parents how they're coping with the same situation as ours and how they're doing it when more skating time is needed as their child moves up to higher levels. Myrna

Your situation is very common at our rink.  There are basically two options: try to find other parents that can bring your child skating during the day (you can take their kids on Saturdays) and/or check out those early morning sessions.   Though it's hard to get up at the crack of dawn (or earlier these days), there are a lot of benefits to skating early.  Usually there aren't many people there -- your daughter can get a lot more practice in without having to dodge other skaters all the time.  If she's practicing a program, she can play her music a lot more times.  Finally, she will be wide awake for school.  Good luck!

It is always a difficult chore to balance work and skating schedules. The easiest way to start is to ask other parents at the club if they can help. If there is another parent who can bring your daughter on a day that both you and your husband work, you could reciprocate by driving their skater on Fridays. There may be a coach who can bring your daughter. You can also look for rinks that have ice time for practice in the evening or on weekends.
