Planning Skating Lessons

Dear Skating Moms: I am "confused" about how skating lesson should be planned. My daughter's coach insists that she can learn higher-level elements after she "perfects" some elements. However, my friend's son's coach throws in many things in one lesson for him to practice. They are about the same age (7 years). My daughter loves skating but she also wants to learn more. Sometimes I feel that I just throw money away just because she had a bad day for her lesson. Should I talk to her coach or just be patient? Lily

Linda says:
There are definitely many styles of teaching skating and each coach has her/his own. I don't know if there is a right or wrong way, just a difference probably based on coach's experience. You should talk to your daughter's coach about her teaching style. If you and your daughter would prefer that she learn harder elements while perfecting the others, you need to let the coach know. Your coach may have a reason for her style and you should know that. There is nothing wrong with asking if newer elements can be taught before the others are perfected.
