Coaches' Expenses

With my daughter soon to enter her first USFSA competition soon, I was shocked to learn of all the fees her coach is going to charge her for attending this (hotel, travel, food, ice time fees, etc.) What are the "normal" types of expenses that should be paid to a coach attending the competition? If it is only one skater that is competiting do we have to cover all her expenses? Lane

Kaylee's Mom says:
Dear Lane,
This may seem like a cop out but, each coach is different.  Ask around in your area to get a feel for what is going on then, you may have to really plan your compititions or put your skater on yourself.

Linda says:
Each coach sets up her/his own fee schedule for attending competitions. These fees should be discussed ideally before you sign up for a competition. If you have already signed up, ask the coach what fee she/he will be charging. Some coaches charge a flat fee for a local (no overnight stays) competition which can be a the same as an hour lesson.

For competitions that require an overnight stay, the coaches expenses are usually paid by the competitors. This can be very expensive if you are the only competitor, but usually more than one skater is competing so the expenses are split among all the skaters. If you feel the fee is too high, you should discuss the alternatives with your coach. Another coach who is going for other skaters may be able to fill in. In return for this fee, you should expect the coach to prepare your child to compete (this is generally 30 minutes before competing) as well as be there afterwards.
