More ice time

Do you have any justification for me going to Ruth's school principal and asking for clearance in the school day for her to have the ability to skate more during the academic year or do you have any ideas about home schooling so my child (USFSA-Pre-Preliminary) can skate more? Thank you. Cindy

The easiest thing to do is to try to get your child out of P.E.  If you can arrange for the P.E. class first thing in the morning or the last one of the day, you may be able to save the couple of extra hours for the rink each day.  All that's usually needed is a letter from your coach.

Before taking your child out of school, check your local club/rink to see if there is any extra ice time before and/or after school, as well as on the weekends. Some rinks offer "public freestyle" sessions and it may not be necessary for your child to miss school at all. Also, ask your child's coach if he/she knows of any public freestyle sessions at nearby rinks.

As for home schooling, you might want start at the National Homeschool Association for more information. Also, do a search on www.yahoo.com on "Home Schooling". There are links that can offer online resources and information on home schooling should you decide to have your child home schooled.

My own child attends a public high school, misses school only when she competes/test with the understanding that she is responsible for any missed classroom assignments and/or homework, skates 6/7 days a week and remains on the Honor Roll every semester. Balancing skating (or any extra curricular activity) and schoolwork can be sucessfully done....the keyword here is "Management!" Playing sports can teach your child discipline, respect, and responsibility. But an education, whether public, private or home schooling, should be an important priority ahead of sports!

The decision about taking a child out of school to get more skating time is very individual. There are things to consider. How would your child feel about missing part of the school day? Would she still be able to socialize and take part in school activities? How would the school react? Even if your child would be comfortable and could handle missing part of the school day, if the teacher/school's attitude is negative it could be a problem. You want the tutor to have good communication with the school. Also, take your child's school schedule into consideration. Is there a day or two that the last class could be missed for skating?

The other issue relates to skating. Do you have access to ice time after school? If you can get in enough time, pulling your child out of school may not be necessary. Is there early morning ice time available? You need to decide if missing school is necessary. If so, then try to approach the school in a non-demanding manner. Ask the school to work with you finding a tutor.

If you decide that you can get additional ice time without missing school, then approach the coach and your child. You need to state what your priorities are. It won't be the same for each skater.
