What are judges at qualifying competitions looking for?
|
Do you ladies think that judges at qualifying competitions are looking for a certain "type" of girl to win? Ex: The young and peppy, not necessarily able to land the jumps, but attempt them? What happened to a "CLEAN" program counting for most of the judging? I was very disappointed in the Regionals this year. Elizabeth. |

The impression you have of the judges looking for a certain 'type' of skater
at the qualifying competitions is shared by others. It is hard to know,
without talking to a judge, what they are looking for in a skater. By
looking at the results for each skater, even the judges are not in
agreement.
There are many people who would prefer to see a well skated clean program with artistry. The skaters seem to be of a mindset that the judges are looking for the difficult jumps and work hard at mastering them. The sport is attracting skaters at a younger age and consequently they are moving up the levels at earlier ages. It does appear that jumps are a focus right now. Even at senior ladies, the triple-triple combination seems to be a 'must' these days
