------------ that he once gave a trying command to me of his courtiers to test his obedience. He said, "Landsmath, you have lost your confessor?
"Yes, sire."
"I suppose the face of the dead will beexposed to view ?"
"Yes sire. He was of the Society of Notre Dame. It is the custom of this order to expose the faces of their dead."
"I want you to go and look at his face."
"Sire, my confessor was my friend," protested Landsmath, in distress.
"It will cost me much suffering to obey you,"
"I command you," said the king.
"I have never disregarded a command of my sovereign. I will obey you," said Landsmath, and he kept his word.
The next morning the king, on inquiring of Landsmath, found that his wantonly cruel order had been obeyed. "What did you see ?" he asked.
The courtier's reply offered his majesty material for serious reflection.
"What did I see ? I saw that your majesty and I are not worth much, after all." A Can of Monkeys.

A Bangor family recently engaged a cook who was quite an artist with the kitchen utensils and the raw material at her com mand, althuogh she was not on good terms with the cook books, being unable to read. She identified canned goods, for instance by the pictures on the labels, but once at least, this did not work, and the results was amusing. A can of desiccated cocoa nut was brought to the house by the groceryman and it bore the well-known trade mark cut of the monkey dallying with a cocoanut. When her gaze fell on that can she was astonished. "Oh, Lor'!" she ejaculated, "I have seen canned corn, canned peaches and most everything canned, but I ever saw any canned monkeys."

The First Street Car.

The first street car was built by John Stephenson. It was first used on November 26, 1832, and ran from Prince street, in the Bowery, to Fourteenth street. On its first trip it carried the Mayor and Common Council. The patent for this car was signed by President Andrew Jackson. The car had three compartments of ten seats each, the doors being on the sides. It also had seats on the top.-New York Tribune.

I love to think of Heaven, it seems not farr away
Its Crystal Streams, refresh me as I near the closeing day
Its balmy winds, are wafed, from the heavenly hills, above
And they fold me in an at mosphere of purity and love,
I love to think of heaven, I long to join the Choir,
To sing the Song of Jesus, my soul would never tire,
The loved ones gone before me, are joining in the song
They Cast their crowns before the Lamb who sits upon the throne
I love to think of heaven, and the greeting I shall meet,
From the loveing band of loved ones, who walk the golden street,
All tears are wiped away, by the Saviours loveing hand
And Sin, and death, are banashed from that glorious happy land
We speak of the land of the blest
of that Country so bright and so fair
And apt are its beauties Confessed
But what must it be to be there
There are three steps to heaven, out of self, into Christ, in to glory.

Dear Sister
I received your letter about the time that mine must have reached Ed Carleton I am sorry that your health is so poor, but I do not think that - it - will ever be much better while you try to make sewing a business. I will never it again, for after sewing a few weeks I have neuraligia constantly.
I have taught school one week.I have about - 20 scholars, six of them are from the age of 15 to 23. The others are from 6 up The crossing of the Rio Grand & Santa Fe Railroad is right in front of the house where I board, about four rods from it and the cars stop here

I am about seven miles from any village. I board in a comfortable place with people that I like very much. They send five children to school. I walk one mile on the rairoad when I go to school it follows the Arkansas river all the way and for many miles further. I wish you could see my schoolhouse it stands on an elevatefd plain about 100 ft above the river. There is about 600 acres in this plain perfectly level then the Rocky Mountains rises all around it. The mountains has a good many evergreen trees growing on them. But this plain grows nothing but Buffalo grass & there are a great many prarie dog villages here close to the schoolhouse. The children do not disturb them.

it seems like old times to get back in school. & I mean to follow it as long as I am able to earn wages. I am going to be careful of my earnings & with what I have got I will in a few years have enough to help me live a little easier. I will send you five dollars at the close of the month & each month and with your rent you can get along without sewing. It would be better to nurse the sick once and a while I would stop that any way.

Write to me soon. I like to know that some one gives me a stray thought once and a while Mary

1894 Tuesday July 24th -

A newpaper clipping pinned to this page a date of July 23d -1894

The Capitol Investment Building and Loan Association, of Lansing, Mich., has organized a local board in this village with the following officers;

President - J. J. Howard.
Vice President - A. J. Williams.
Secretary - E. A. Sheldon.
Treasurer - H. E. Cole.
Attorney - James Sleeth.
Board of Directors - F. S. Ruggles,
S. W. Lawrence and F. A. Showerman.

This puts the Association in a posi to make loans in our village, when applied for, and in that way help to build homes for our citizens, and indirectly benefit all property owners here. On Monday afternoon, the 23rd inst., Mrs. F. E. Sleeth gave a reception in honor of her sister-in-law, Mrs S. R. Kelsey, of Corunna, to a large number of old friends and acquaintances, who enjoyed this visit to the utmost, in reminisences that were both humorous and sad. In looking back through the avenues of past memories they beheld once more the pioneer homes, privations, hardships, large families, fever and ague, sickness and death, pioneer roads and crossways, winding in every direction through the wilderness of Shiawassee county, until the exertion and labor of years interpersed better homes, beautified the highways, built railroads, school and church buildings, which now all tend to make Shiawassee one of the most attractive counties of Michigan. All who remember Mrs. Kelsey will recollect her fun-loving nature, and now at the age of 75, she will entertain her friends with as much mirth as ever, although her road has not always been strewn with flowers. H. C. Moore photographed the company, after which a repast was served and goodbyes were exchanged. On Tuesday following Mrs. K Schad invited company in honor of Mrs. Kelsey to spend the day with Mrs Haviland at their beautiful country residence, and an equally enjoyable time was had. Two newspaper articles
The funeral of Belle Niles Hecox, of Oak Grove, was held here Saturday, sermon by the Rev. A. Curry, burail in Byron Cemetery. Her death was a very sad one on account of her youth, her being tired of life, and resorting to means to bring this to an end. Her husband was greatly censured for un kind treatment; how far this went may not be clear to all, but there can be no question of the surroundins in the case of the deceased that drove her to a desperation ending in death
The second
IN A BURNING BLANKET.
Demented Woman's Method of Ending Her Existance. OWOSSO, Sept. 6. - Miss Millie Com stock preferred death to spending the rest of her life in an insane asylum. She adopted a sure method of ending her existance. Saturating a blanket with kerosene oil she wrapped herself in it. Then she placed a match to the blanket and drew her head into its folds, completely enveloping herself in flame. She died in great agony. Miss Comstock was a music teacher. She had been in poor health for some time and preparations were being made to remove her to the Pontiac asylum.

OBITUARY

WILLIAM JOSLIN died at his home in this village April 5th, 1895, aged 67 years; he was born in Syracuse, N. Y., in 1827, and came to Michigan with his parents in 1840. In 1851 he was mar ried to Miss Adaline Hillman, near Fenton, and immediately commenced housekeeping in this village, in the residence he built, and in which he spent all his married life of over forty years. By occupation he was a builder and contractor, and by perseverance and energy accumulated a fine property, owning two farms besides his fine home. thus leaving his family in comfortable circumstances; his wife, one son, Jerry, and two daughters, Mrs Rose Kelsey and Miss Flora survive him; also two sisters, Mrs S. Morris, of Grand Rapids and Miss Mary, of Marquette; and two brothers, George, in California, and Isaac in Marquette. For four years he has been a great sufferer, two of which he has been a helpless invalid and could neither hear nor speak, making it almost unbearable for himself and his family. His sister, Miss Mary, of Marquette, has been his constant at tendant through many weary months, tenderly watched over him and antici pated his wishes in such a manner that greatly assisted the wife and daughter and won the respect of the entire com munity. The very best of care and every luxury that could be had was not wanting, many coming from his sister at Grand Rapids. In the death of Mr. Joslin our village has lost a citizen whose honesty and integrity was un questioned. He was a kind and oblig ing neighbor, husband, father and brother, and great sympathy is felt by the neighbors and friends for the family in their afflication.

The funeral services were held on Monday at 2 p.m., at their residence. Rev. W. W. Benson of the M.E. church, officiating. Burial in the Byron ceme ery.

May 31, 1895. - OBITUARY.

The funeral of Mr. Isaac Barnum was held at the M. E. church last Sunday, under the management of the Masonic order. Short address were made by the Revs. Curry and Benson. A bi ographical sketch was read by Mr. Isaac Crawford, which we print below; ISAAC S. BARNUM, the subject of this Sketch was born in Delaware, N. Y., August 17th, 1827. At the age of nine he, with his parents, moved from N. Y. State and settled in the township of Burns in 1836, then very new country, living most of the time upon the farm contiguous to the one where his parents first located one mile south of this vil lage. until the spring of 1892, at which time he settled in this village. Mr. Barnum was one of the scholars in the first school taught in this village and township by a lady named Malinda Brown, At the age of 25 the gold ex citement of California overtook him and soon after this he was booked on board a vessel to double Cape Horn, on a perilous and tedious journey of six months to the land of gold. On his ar rival in California he at once com menced the work of mining for gold, and continued his work for about two years, when he concluded to return to Michigan with the money he had ob tained in the far west, and start out in life's work in the chosen occupation which he has so successfully followed for over forty years on the same farm, one mile south of this village. After returning to this township and abtain ing the farm referred to, he renewed the acquaintance of Miss Amelia Craw ford, of this township, daughter of Robert and Sally Crawford, who were among the first settlers in this new country, and in June, 1855, was joined in holy matrimony with her, by Rev. R. C. Crane, and the twain started upon life's voyage together, and continued as one until the Great Master called for the head of the family on the 22 d inst., and closed up the ledger of lifes doings with Isaac S. Barnum, and called him from labor to rest. where no sorrow or sickness, pain or death are felt or known, and the light of the countenance of the Great Shepherd dispels all doubts and fears. In 1863 Mr. Barnum was made a Master Mason of Byron lodge, where he remained an hon ored member until called to enter the eternal building not made with hands, and associate with the founder of the order of the plaines of endless day; and those this day surrounding and guard ing the silent remaines of Isaac S. Bar num, and you who will soon commit those remains to their long resting place are again reminded that man is mortal, and that "dust thou art and

unto dust thou shalt return" The family of Mr. Barnum consisted of a wife and the three children, Ella Barnum-Barnes, May Barnum-Smith, and Osmun S. Barnum. The little boy passed over the river at the age of one year and eight months, and has grown up to spiritual manhood where no temptation to sin ever could enter, and baneful associations were never known, and I have no doubt gave his father a hearty welcome to his long home. At the age of 25 May Barnum-Smith, sec ond daughter of the deceased, was called away from her little family and kind friends to join the unnumbered company which John saw, which no man could number. The death of May was a severe blow to her father, and it was hard for him to be reconciled to the separation. But how short a time before father leaves all earthly friends to join those in a clime and take up the golden harp prepared Another Obituary DEATHS. MR. JAMES CUMMINS
Another Pioneer Gone

We are again called upon to chronical the death of one of one of our oldest and most active pioneers, who departed this life on Thursday evening, December 15, 1892, from heart failure. Mr Cummins had been in poor health all the fall and winter and his demise was not a shock to his many old friends in this city and county. The funeral services were held at Morrice, his late home, on Monday; Rev. W. W. Benson officiating. His remains were brought to this city for interment. Mr Cummins was born in county Down Ireland, in 1814 and came to Michigan with his parents in 1840; and was one of the first settlers in Perry township. Mr. Cummins has led a very active life, dealing largely in real estate. He was a progressive citizen and used his means freely to advance any worthy public enterprise. He was a stock holder in the Detroit Grand Haven & Milwaukee Railway Company, to the extent of $8000 and $1,000 in the Chicago & Northwestern; the most of which resulted in a free gift to the companys, to aid inthe State Insurance Co., but realized their construction. He also had $5,000 nothing from the investment. He was one of the founders of the exchange bank of J. B. Wheeler & Co. and formerly held a large amount of stock in the first National bank of Corunna. He was at one time the largest tax payer in the county. He held several township offices and in 1848, was elected one of the Judges of the county. He was elected county treasurer in 1850, re-elected in 1852-54 and was again elected in 1864-66 '68 and '70. Mr Cummins was a man of generous nature and impulsive. Many there are in the county, to-day, who remember him with grateful hearts for timely assistance, when a friend in need, was one indeed. He leaves a widow and five children; three sons and two daughters. William E., of this city and Frank and Fred, of the state of Washington and Miss Julia and Mrs Elizabeth Phelps who reside in California, to mourn the loss of a kind husband and a affectionate father and hosts of friends in the city who mourn the loss of a sincere kind friend.

TERRIBLE CRIME IN DURAND

LAYTON LEECH FATALLY ASSAULTED BY HIS HIRED MAN.

KNOCKED DOWN WITH AN AX AND HID IN BARN.

MRS. LEECH THEN SHOT BY THE SAME FIEND.

The Victims' Assailant, McGire, Threatened with Linch ?

3, 1893 Fenton, January 2.-(Special.)- An atrocious crime was committed early Sunday evening at the house of Layton Leech, a farmer living one mile east of Durand, Mr. Leech and wife are young and prosperous farmers, and have been married but a year. About two weeks ago they employed a tramp who had been lounging around Dueand to chop wood and do chores about the farm. Sunday, the tramp, who had been on a hunting excursion in the woods, reported that he had found several rabbits safely housed in an old log. On the pretext of securing the rabbits he prevailed upon Mr. Leech to accompany him to the woods. Securing an ax they started, Leech walking ahead of the hired man. It is claimed by parties who have visited the scene of the tragedy that when near the barn the tramp struck his employer a terrific blow with the blade of the ax on the back of the head, inflicting a frightful gash. when Leech was FELLED TO THE GROUND He was struck several blows about the head, and then the would-be murderer dragged his victum to the barn. But a few minutes elapsed from the time of their departure before the fiend returned to the house and asked Mrs. Leech for a gun which was the properity of his employer. The young wife suspecting something wrong made anxious inquiry as to the whereabouts of her husband. The hired man evaded her questions, and she reluctantly gave into his possession the gun. He leveled the gun at the woman, and taking quick aim fired, the bullet passing through the back portion of the neck. Leaving the woman in an unconscious condition the fiend then hastily departed. The next morning, Monday, Mrs. Leech who had regained consciousness, managed to crawl out into the yard and her screams soon AROUSED THE NEIGHBORS. Tom Sturgis was the first to respond, and he carried the exhausted woman into the house. A search was made for Mr. Leech and he was soon discovered in the barn in an insensible condition. It was evident from his surroundings that during the night he was conscious at times and had endeavored to rise and walk to the house. When found his eyes were swollen, showing that he had been further assaulted after the cruel blow from the ax. Mr. Leech has been unconscious to-day and cannot give any of the minute details of the tragedy. His physicans have but slight hopes of his recovery. Drs Marshall, Fair and Cole, of Durand, have been in attendance all day and report that Mrs. Leech may recover. She has been able to testify that the hired man, did the terrible deed. It is further rumored to-night that Mcguire added to the enormity of his crime by assaulting the woman after the shooting. Before leaving his first victum McGuire took from his pocket about $40 in money and a watch. During the struggle at the house the watch was dropped on the floor, where it was afterwards found. Robbery was the incentive of the crime, as Leech had sold considerable grain lately, but he did not carry his money to any large amount on his person. McGuire it is thought, took one of the night trains out of Durand, and as the crime was not discovered until the next morning he had time to reach Chicago or some other city before it was known. Durand people are greatly excited over the deed, and if McGuire is caught and not safely guarded Judge Lynch will settle his case. The authorities are making every effort to capture McGuire. He is described as about 5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion and sandy hair and clean shaven.
