The DCHAPD is a small department of dedicated officers, approximately 90; with nearly 80% (eighty percent) being Special Police Officers. The DCHAPD has built its department around these Special Police Officers, all of which are trained at the Metropolitan Police Academy training center in Washington, DC. Like every other law enforcement officer in the District of Columbia, these officers are required to undergo an intense training curriculum. The DCHAPD Special Police Officers training lasts an average of 650 hours, compared with the citywide officers whose training lasts an average of 1300 hours. Although the Special Police Officers are typically on foot patrol, many are certified, and patrol regularly, on mountain bikes. The DCHAPD Special Police Officers jurisdiction is limited to the property of the DC Housing Authority, except in cases of fresh pursuit. Because of the jurisdictional limits of their authority, the Special Police Officers are most often the first officers on the scene during a police emergency. Quite frequently, the department teams citywide officers with Special Police Officers for special operations in the community (i.e. traffic checkpoints, warrants, surveillance, etc.). Our Special Police Officers are the critical link in the success of the DCHAPD.
