The Matthews Connection . . .

On December 20, 1798, Silas Mathews, b. at Fishing Creek, NJ on September 17, 1777, married Eleanor Hughes, b. Cape May, NJ on August 7, 1776.  Eleanor died in Cape May on October 5, 1818 and Silas on September 8 1830.  Both are buried in Cold Spring Cemetery.

Eleanor was the daughter of Ellis Hughes and Eleanor Hurst both of Cape May, NJ

5.       Thomas Matthews, b. Cape May, October 4, 1808 / d. November 21, 1848 Married June 6, 1830 to Sarah Russell Clark, b. June 6, 1811 / d. October 8, 1882

Last Will and Testament

In the name of God Amen, I Sarah Crowell do make this my last Will and testament.   I do order my executor after my decease to divide my personal property as soon as the law allows.  In the following manner, if any should remain after my decease, namely I do order that Ellen H. Webb widow of Robert G. Webb deceased, Anne E. Webb wife of John Webb, Moses W. Mathews, or their children Alida Cresse and Fanne B. Cresse daughter of Jonathan Cresse and Emly R. Cresse my sole heirs share and share alike only Alida and Fannie B. Cresse shall have but one share equally with the rest of my heirs: If Alida or Fannie B. Cresse are deceased before they come in possession which shall not be untill they are eighteen years of age, then the next youngest shall have the said share.  I give my daughter Emly R. Cresse one dollar. Azubah C. Schellinger and Theadore Matthews have been paid their full share.
Lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my son Moses W. Matthews my executor to this my last will and testament all former wills previous to this date are disanuled and void.
In testimony whereof I have hereto put my hand, seal affixed in the year of our Lord one thousand eighteen hundred and eighty.                                                                                 Sarah Crowell
