JEHU CURTIS CLAY WEBB

1847 – 1907

Jehu was born February 26, 1847.  He and his brother, Robert Lawrence had a canal boat building business named “Webb Brothers” at the Dock House in Port Providence, Pa.  Port Providence was then known as Lumberville.  In  _____ he was contracted by the Smithsonian Institute to build a scale model of a Connestoga Wagon.   His home became the Webb homestead and is located along the Schuylkill Navigation Canal in Montgomery County, Pa.

At one time, Jehu owned five other properties in Port.  On March 11, 1869 at the age of 21, Jehu married Anne Edmonds Matthews (Weeks), born January 5, 1944. This was Ann's second marriage the first being to Charles H. Weeks (see Matthews History).  Anne died April 3, 1893, of Apoplexy at age 49.  Jehu adopted Anne’s child from her first marriage, Charles Henry Weeks.

Jehu married again to Sophia B. Root, b. 1874 / d. 1929.  They had one son, J. Curtis C. Webb born 1895, d. 1921. Age 26.   J. Curtis was somehow disabled and spent many of the last years of his life in a wheelchair.  His mother, Sophia never remarried even though her husband Jehu died when she was only 33.

Later in life, Jehu became the Democratic Chairman for the State of Pennsylvania and was known as a grand public speaker.  He also worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Philadelphia, Pa.  A statue called the “Griffin” which once graced the PRR Station in Philadelphia is still located at the Webb homestead.   It is stated in “Bates History” that Jehu Curtis was mustered on June 20, 1863 and discharged on August 4, 1863 Co. Private G Co. 33rd  Regiment, Pennsylvania Emergency Militia.  Jehu died on February 2, 1907 at age 60 of diabetes.

Lucius Webb Esq
Dear Sir
Having excepted a position in the U.S. Branch Mint Denver City Colorado Territory in consequence of which I have resigned the Captaincy of the Co which I have had the honor for the past two and a half years of Commanding in taking leave of the Co. I deem it but simple justice to you sir and the two Noble & Patriotic Sons of yours to bear my humble Testimony to their fidelity and courage under the most trying circumstances a Soldier can be subjected to. In the five weeks campaign we were engaged in they behaved nobly and had long & tiresome marches subjected to storms and the burning rays of a July sun. Often without rations encamping at nights without shelter in the presence of the enemy they were cool & selfposesed. Amidst all their innovations I never heard a murmer of complaint escape their lips. Such my dear sir is the Character & Conduct of your sons William & Jehue. Hoping that you and your noble boys may long live and enjoy health happiness and prosperity is the humble and devout prayer of your obt servt

B F Harvey ( Benjamin F )

Late Capt. Co. G 33 regt Prov
