September 4, 1998: Yacht Club Races
Kohl, John, and I out for Friday night races. Winds were about 12 from the north with gusts. Had up the jib and reefed main. Course: start at J then AHBJ (green). We were first over the line on port tack! Crossed the fleet and were sailing well. We should have shook out the reef earlier and we overstood on one of the marks. Beat Suki Too but probably finished second to last again. We'll have to try something different next week.
September 9, 1998: Magothy River Sailing Association (MRSA) Races
Jeff and I took Alt Escape out for our first Wednesday night race. We had up a reefed main and the jib. Shook out the reef during the race. Started at C, course was F, B, C. We sailed in the Corinthian Class and were the first to finish! However, there weren't any other boats in our start. Still, we made our presence known as the only Catalina 22 on the river and the first in many years (if ever) to have raced on a Wednesday Night.
September 11, 1998: Yacht Club Races
John and I for Friday night races. Very light winds. Course started at B, and was JB(2), but shortened to just JB. Had a mediocre start, drifting over the line second to last. But, we stuck to our plan of sailing straight for the mark no matter what. We snuck up on our competition and established an inside overlap at the mark. Turned and kept the competition to leeward. Finished second over the line by about 15 seconds, but corrected in FIRST PLACE!!! John and I were so excited we could hardly contain ourselves. We sailed up and down the river for a couple of hours to celebrate.
September 16, 1998: MRSA Races
Jeff and I out for Series 6, Race 2. Start at C, course was EC. Light wind and we had the main and genoa up. We started well but the wind died before we could finish. Still we learned some about weight placement. Last Wednesday night race of the year... I wish we could have finished.
September 18, 1998: Yacht Club Races
Kohl, Jeff, John, and I out for the last Friday night race. Start at J, course was B-C (red). Second over the line and a good start. We did a sail change downwind in 1.5 minutes! We sailed a good race with everyone working as a team. New shirts for the crew and Go Alt Escape on the signal flags made a fitting end to the season. Double Trouble made some noise about protesting for holding a sail out, but that couldn't change the camaraderie and friendship celebrated in tonight's race. And, that's why I started racing my boat in the first place. A season well ended. Will have to try a cruise or two before winter.
