Day 12: Wednesday, August 22I woke up at 6:00 to the sound of rain on the roof. Not particularly strong at first, but growing into a good downpour. We learned this morning that it was good that we had got out of Bermudian Landing when we did. The roads began flooding last night all across Belize. And, Tropical Storm wasn’t finished with Belize. The storm had touched off a small tornado that hit Bermudian Landing not long after we left. Howler Monkey Lodge wasn’t affected, but several homes were destroyed. Luckily, no one was hurt and the homes will be quickly rebuilt. With this much rain, we won’t go out until it lightens up. So, I went back to sleep until about 7:30. We had a late breakfast of oatmeal and mangos. The rain continued into the early afternoon. So, in the morning, we passed the time giving Caryn feedback on the Earthwatch briefing book we’d all received. The most significant changes—add information on the possibility of hurricanes and tropical storms. We passed the afternoon playing scrabble, checkers, and just talking and sharing stories. I had another dinner of rice and beans (everyone else had stew chicken), and we were accompanied by Jose and Mr. Gilroy. Jerry popped in for a while and we played Spanish Checkers. After talking about our plans for Friday and the weekend, Caryn made reservations for several of us to go to a cave in the Cayo district that was only discovered a few years ago. The cave was used by Mayan priests to do sacrifices and it is quite an expedition to get there. Went to bed early, about 9:00 p.m., to be ready for our last full day on the island.
