On Sunday October 18, 1953, a break in a 30 inch natural gas transmission line set off an explosion in a cornfield near Carmichaels, PA . The explosion ripped an 18 foot deep crater in the earth and caused 300 foot flames to shoot into the air. No fatalities occurred due to the blast.
An estimated 5000 persons poured into the vicinity within two hours after the blast to see what was happening. State police troopers from both the Waynesburg and Uniontown substations handled traffic and crowd control.
The photo below, of those troopers, was taken at Carmichaels Firemen's Hall, October 18, 1953 the day of the explosion. It was published in the October 19th edition of Uniontown's The Morning Herald.

and murder suspect, ex-convict Orville Kittle of California, PA.
According to the newspaper article, Kittle was accused of shooting and
killing his nephew, Wayne Lasko of Cleveland, OH as they grappled for a
gun which Kittle was holding. Kittle had taken the service revolver from
a local police chief's holster; the chief was investigating a domestic
disturbance invovling Kittle and Lasko.
Other police then arrived on the scene and Kittle made off with another
police chief's car after firing shots at the officers. Kittle was
apprehended about three hours later without a struggle by Tprs. Gyurke
and Mulcahy who had set up a roadblock near Crucible.
