Belize 2000

Day 1

Sunrise from the balcony of our room.
The Chateau Caribbean Hotel

We got to Belize a day early, as travel to and from Belize is somewhat unreliable and catching up with a trip once it's underway is difficult and expensive. We all stayed at the Chateau Caribbean. Paul and I had a very nice room - enormous, with a separate sitting area and private balcony. Anne was not so lucky and got a more mundane room. The Carib has an air of faded grandeur about it, but was the most luxurious place we stayed all week.

Good omen #1: Paul, by coincidence, wound up sitting right behind me on the plane.

Good omen #2: The American Airlines magazine (motto: "a magazine worth reading if you're stuck in a seat for three hours") had an article about our trip!!!

The Belize City airport has only two gates. Also, unlike back home in D.C., the cab drivers speak English.

The three of us had dinner and a drink at the Radisson up the street from our hotel. Back at our room, Anne and I groused about how we were going to have to rough it all week. Paul entertained us with stories of what conditions were like on his first adventure trip - the one to Southeast Asia in the 60's. Anne and I stopped complaining.

On to the next day ...
