Gregory executed over forty hand hammered lead/copper repousse. With a small hammer he pounded
thousands of strokes onto a thick small sheet of metal. The pounding and heat it generated
made the metal pliable, as it stretched he molded to his desired design which was done from
the inside. Though Gregory executed thousands of ceramic artworks, it was in his metalworks
that he bared his soul, his life struggles. And then perhaps a very good way of venting his
frustrations?? Though I had been at the Gregory's before, it was at his metal period
that he walked me through his studios explaining the different aspects of his trade and yes,
complaining that he heard footsteps on the roof, etc.; probably attempted breakin.
At that time he was going through the most stressful period of his life. He had been
commissioned by Mr. & Mrs. Farmer to build an Art Center in Middlefield, Mass and what he had
anticipated to be the height of his career ended instead in tragedy when Mr. Farmer murdered
his wife. The adverse publicity was directed against Gregory, the third party, instead of the
murderer.
