WAYLANDE GREGORY 1905-1971
The art deco collectibles of Waylande Gregory are highly sought after since each one is individually designed, never duplicated. Included are also the plaques (chargers) and the larger art deco vases of the 1930's.
FLAME
3/4 Life Size; Part glazed ceramic; 1938.
Gregory had already been successful in
the execution of the larger size ceramic
sculptures; The Swimmer, The Bather and
then continued with FLAME, depicted as a
delicate young female engulfed in fire of
attractive glazes of deep reds and yellows.
This was a prelude to his intended 1939 NY
World's Fair project which he depicted as a
more mature female, menancing, forboding
and very forceful in its movement and design.
It also has less glazes and rougher texture
resembling bricks in a hot oven after the
black soot was burned off by high fire.
