FAIRMOUNT ANIMAL HOSPITAL'S
RECOMMENDED YEARLY VACCINES FOR
THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA:
Please note that all vaccines are optional
except for rabies vaccine.
Upon physical evaluation of your pet and discussion with your veterinarian,
a protocol specific to your pet and/or your needs will be designed.
Definitions:
A "core vaccine" is a vaccine against a disease that pose a substantial risk
in dogs and cats and widely distributed in the United States/ World)
A major "noncore vaccine" is a vaccine against a disease that pose a substantial
risk in dogs and cats and is distributed within a particular locality (i.e. state, county) in the United States.
A minor "noncore vaccine" is a vaccine against a disease that pose a risk in
dogs and cats, is distributed within a particular locality (i.e. state, county) in the United States, and must address
particular need of the client/pet lifestyle).
A. DOGS:
REQUIRED VACCINE:
Rabies (Required by Phila. Law): Note that a rabies vaccination certification from a veterinarian
is needed in order to obtain a dog license.
ELECTIVE CANINE HEALTH PREVENTION VACCINES:
MAJOR CORE (international) VACCINES:
Parvovirus: (Very important yearly vaccine for dogs living in a large city like Philadelphia.
Parvoviral disease causes severe bloody diarrhea that can be deadly to dogs and is highly contagious to other unvaccinated
dogs.)
Distemper
Hepatitis Adenovirus Type 2
MAJOR NONCORE (Local) VACCINES: (recommended for Fairmount Park area).
Lyme ("Recommended for use in dogs living in or visiting regions where the risk of tick exposure is considered
high, or disease is known to be endemic" 2006 American Animal Hospital Association Vaccination Guidelines).
Leptospirosis: (reported in Philadelphia county/ Fairmount area)
Bordetella: (Every six months in high-risk environments according to the American Animal Hospital Association
2006 guidelines)
MINOR NONCORE (Local) VACCINES: (recommended on a case to case basis)
Giardia (prevention of oocyst shedding in dogs, giardia testing is recommended if the animal is not vaccinated.
Fairmount Animal hospital recommends vaccination for pets whose owners are of advance age or immunocompromised in anyway (i.e.
owners that have crohn's disease, Aids, or are under any kind of treatment that may compromise their immune system in anyway
such as on steroid therapy, immunosupressive medication etc...).
Coronavirus
(young dogs / case to
case basis, generally not done in older dogs, unless otherwise requested by owner)
Parainfluenza: (recommended if the animal is being boarded or going regularly to a dog park where parainfluenza is
at a high risk.)
Note: By vaccinating your dog with both core and non-core vaccines you will provide your pet with a
maximum protection against most common diseases.
B. CATS:
Rabies (Required by Phila. Law)
ELECTIVE FELINE HEALTH PREVENTION VACCINES:
MAJOR CORE (international) VACCINES:
Rhinotracheitis: Very important vaccine for cats living in a large city like Philadelphia. Shelter cats
are unusually predisposed to the disease.
Panleukopenia
Calicivirus
Leukemia (this is a core vaccine for outdoor and semi-outdoor cats. Cats must be tested negative
prior to vaccination)
MAJOR NONCORE (Local) ELECTIVE VACCINES: (recommended for Fairmount Park area.
Chlamidia
Leukemia
Virulent strain of Calicivirus
MINOR NONCORE (Local) ELECTIVE VACCINES: (recommended on a case to case basis)
