ARSIC-International Registered Federation of Delaware: President elect Dr. Franco Duarte, ARSIC-International Initiateur and white glove of Savate- July 2000

In July 2000 a new state formed a State Federation. The Delaware Federation of Savate is definitively born. This with the assistance of ARSIC-International. The current president Elect: Dr. Franco Duarte, one of the first to practice Savate in the United State (starting in 1983), has a lot of work to do in this state where Savate was practically nonexistent until a couple years ago. However with the support of ARSIC-International, President Franco Duarte will be able to develop rapidly this Federation. Dr. Franco Duarte has taught Savate in Arkansas and Illinois. The Federation is totally recognized by ARSIC-International and is registered.

Savate Technical Tips:
Author:  Savate Professeur Jean-Noel Eynard

The length of a "direct’ or the first technical punch which is taught in Savate to Savateur can be increase by stretching out the shoulder just before contact. This not only increase the length of the punch but also increase the power coming from the ground. As a reminder the power of all savate punches comes from the ground by specific techniques called techniques of power maximization. In the direct, the power is transmitted from the ground to the hip by the intermediary of the foot pressure on the ground. The power is then redirected from the hip to the shoulder and the extension of the shoulder facilitate transfer of this power to the elbow and finally to the 2 first knuckle prior to the hit itself.

Savate Defense: Les coups en Manchette:
Author: FIBFSDA SAVATE Professeur Jean-Noel Eynard, V.M.D.

Les Coups en Manchettes

Coups en Manchette= Any hits with the “manchette” area of the arm.

The word manchette is derived from the French word “manche” meaning cuffing area of the arm. The true manchette is a hit given with the for arm ulna. However “Les coups de manchette” regroup all hits which are not using the elbows (Les coups de coude) nor the fist (Les coups de poing). The hit is given in the swing form “Manchette en (form de) Swing” (i.e. straight arm using the distal part of the radius bone) or in a crochet form: “Manchette en Crochet” (i.e.: also called true manchette). Finally it can be done in a back fist motion but hitting with both the radius and ulnar bones and not the fist.

The “true manchette” is the most difficult manchette to give. The hit is given in a pushing/ spinning motion with transfer of power from the ground up to the hip and the shoulder using the dual combined transfer power techniques from both the “crochet” (spinning transfer power) and the “direct” (pushing transfer power). The hit is given in a pushing and body spinning motion similar to a coup de coude but with the strike given with the ulna.

Although les coups en manchettes can be used and taught in self defense form of Savate, les coup en manchettes are not allowed as offensive techniques on the ring in Box-Francaise Savate. However, they can often used as defensive techniques such as in “parade oppose de fouette” ou “block de crochet”

 Internet Instructors Courses for Savateurs:
A First for ARSIC-International in the world.
Author: Executive board of ARSIC-International

ARSIC-International Board has approved and passed a resolution  for a new web base internet courses leading to the Diploma of Initiator instructor, Aid-Moniteur Instructor and Moniteur Instructeur. At first this may be choking,  however if one keep in mind that Instructors of Savate are required to take examination in Legislation of Savate, Anatomy related to Savate, basic Physiology, as well as history and teaching methodology of Savate, one can quickly understand that the use of the Internet for certification purpose can make things a lot easier in a country as large as the US with so few Professors certified to give instructors examination.

Do not be fooled! successfully passing the examination will require to get a practical. Videotape and Web cam are used in this program to become certified as an instructor of Savate by ARSIC-International.

Moniteur examination will however require a practicum in ARSIC-Central base. The candidate will have to teach a full hour of Savate to class in front of a Federal/ Registry Jury. Diplomas will be signed by a Professor of Savate and sealed by ARSIC-International.

Marseille: Savate City of birth:
Author: M.S.F.T.

Marseille or Marseilles (Greek Massalia; Latin Massilia), city, southern France, capital of Bouches-du-Rhône Department, on the Gulf of Lions (an arm of the Mediterranean Sea).
Most of what is written on Savate history never mention anything about the city were Savate was born. Knowing a little about he history of this city may help us to understand the origins of Savate in a greater extend. The following will enlight your mind regarding Marseille or Marseilles. Wars shaped the way in which ancesters of Savateurs and Chausson artist were taught how to fight how to fight.  About 600 BC the site of the city was colonized by Greeks from Asia Minor and called Massalia. The settlement flourished, and in the Punic Wars it sided with Rome against Carthage. In 49 BC, after supporting Pompey the Great in the civil war against Julius Caesar, the city was annexed by Rome. The inhabitants were converted to Christianity during the 3rd century AD, and in 304 St. Vincent was martyred here. In the 10th century it became a dominion of the counts of Provence, and in the 13th century it was made a republic. The republic of Marseilles and its history was then incorporated into the kingdom of France in 1481.
Commerce at the port increased in the 18th century, before suffering a severe setback during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. After 1850 port facilities were greatly expanded, and many industries were established at Marseille. The city was occupied and badly damaged by the Germans in World War II. Subsequently, major construction programs transformed Marseille into a modern community with many high-rise buildings. Population (1982) 878,689. In the bay fronting Marseille are several islands, including the islet of If, site of the 16th-century Château d'If, mentioned in The Count of Monte Cristo, by the French novelist and Savateur Alexandre Dumas. Several forts protect the harbor, and on a high strip of land projecting west into the bay is the 19th-century Church of Notre Dame de la Garde, surmounted by a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary. The main thoroughfare, Canebière, is one of the great avenues of the world and a multitude of Savate clubs are present in the surrounding. These Savate clubs blossomed after World War II. Marseille has few relics of the ancient period, although it is the oldest city in France. In the late 1960s archaeologists uncovered parts of the Hellenistic ramparts of the city, and a section of the medieval Cathedral of La Major still stands.
The second largest city of France, it is a major sea port and an important commercial and industrial center. The city is linked by canal with the Rhône River and is served by extensive rail and air transport facilities; the large petroleum port of Fos, chiefly developed in the 1970s, is nearby. Manufactures of the Marseille metropolitan area include iron and steel, chemicals, plastic and metal products, ships, refined petroleum, construction materials, soap, and processed food.

BASIC ANATOMY (Knowledge required for blue glove and future instructors)
Author: Southern California Orthopedic Institute.

The objective in knowing some anatomy in Savate is to learn where the weakest points are located and where to maximize injuries caused by a specific kick.

The bones of the knee, the femur and the tibia, meet to form a hinge  joint. The joint is protected in front by the patella (kneecap). The  joint is cushioned by articular cartilage that covers the ends of the tibia and femur, as well as the underside of the patella. The lateral meniscus and medial meniscus are pads of cartilage that further cushion the joint, acting as shock absorbers between the bones. Ligaments help to stabilize the knee. The collateral ligaments run along the sides of the knee and limit sideways motion. The anterior  cruciate ligament, or ACL, connects the tibia to the femur at the  center of the knee. Its function is to limit rotation and forward motion  of the tibia. (A damaged ACL is replaced in a procedure known as  an ACL Reconstruction.) The posterior cruciate ligament, or PCL  (located just behind the ACL) limits backward motion of the tibia. These components of your knee, along with the muscles of your leg,                        work together to manage the stress your knee receives as you walk,  run and jump or get kicked in the knee. A medially located kick will injure your opponent knee more than if a same kick with same power is given on the lateral side. This is because the medial colateral ligament is weaker than the lateral one.
