He was a member of the Amatuer Radio Relay League, which relayed messages in times of disasters. In World War 2 he was a civil defense warden partially because of his radio background. Besides radio his other hobby was amatuer photography. He made both still photographs and early home movies of the family in the thirties and fourties. Many of his still photographs won prizes in prestigious competitions. He worked as a chemist for Shakespeare Products company, which was a plating plant in Kalamazoo. He also was an early pioneer in wastewater treatment and lectured on the topic as well as operation the system for Shakespeare Products, which fed the final water to a fish tank which held a healthy smallmouth bass.
After he retired Neal worked as a volunteer setting up electro-plating plants in Lima, Peru and in Mexico. He and his wife, Wilma spent extended periods on these projects and were fascinated by the cultures they visited. Neal always brought his camera and took many slides and photographs. They visited Macu Piccu in the Andes, and cruised down the Rhine in Germany as well as spending some time in Bentheim, Germany researching the Schreur family ancestry and in the Netherlands visiting relatives. Neal spoke good Dutch and passable German.

When Wilma was brought home as a baby from the hospital it was to a rustic farmhouse north of Kalamazoo. She grew up on the farm and always loved to work in the garden. As a girl she did farm chores like washing celery and attended church or school functions, occassionally outdoor movies shown on the wall of the school. She attended Western State Normal School in Kalamazoo, Michigan where she got a lifetime teacher's certificate. She taught at a one room schoolhouse in Cooper Township and other schools in Allegan and Kalamazoo counties until she married Neal Schreur. During World War 2 she had a job selling appliances for George's appliance. The first hired her when they delivered a washer to her and saw that her laundry was done very well. They had her show women how to use the new washing machines and sell them soap. She earned a pressing machine as a bonus. One day she came home and found the children had been through the entire house with a mud fight so she quit work to be a full time mother until her last child was in school at which time she went back to finish the last two years of college at Western Michigan University and go back into teaching in Comstock, Michigan from 1965-1973.After retirement she travelled and summered in Florida. When her husband died she rented a room to students or professors at Western Michigan University, and tutored spanish speaking people in English (She had spent time in Peru and Mexico with her husband, Neal, when he was there as a volunteer to help set up electro-plating plants).
Wilma was a member of the Reformed Church, and was very dedicated to her religion. She and Neal set aside one tenth of their income for charitable works for others and ascribed their success in life to their following their faith that way. Their lives were always God centered and they did their best to pass their values to their children.
Wilma spoke fluent Dutch, though of an archaic dialect from the mis 19th century (West Michigan Dutch), passable German, and relatively fluent Spansih later in life. She liked gardening and painting, and taking walks in the woods. She and her friends got together regularly to play cards. She had a long and vital life but eventually fell prey to Alzheimer's disease a few years before she died. She also suffered from type II diabetes and had failing vision and false teeth which she had worn since she was young.

Frederik DeJongh was a baker's assistant as a boy, working for the DeBok family across the street. He went to Grand Haven, Michigan with the DeBok family, then later to Kalamazoo. His brother, Stoffel, suggested to him that he should go into the business of farming celery because it was an easy way to make a living. The crop was planted in the spring, harvested later in the summer, and didn't require tending between. It grew well in rich, wet, lowland soil which was abundent in the Kalamazoo Area. At that time Frederik was living with the DeBoks in a house in an area that later became Kleinstuck Preserve. He bought a celery field along a creek which was later paralleled by Crosstown Parkway. When he married he had a house in town, but when his wife was in the hospital having their first baby be bought a farm north of Kalamazoo on Allen Road. The farm didn't have running water, indoor plumbing, or electric. His wife, who was a city girl from Grand Haven, was, needless to say, not at all pleased when she was brought there from the hospital instead of to a house in town. He was a member of the Christian Reformed Church. He continued to farm celery, later also farming other vegetables and pansies. He liked to smoke cigars and had fun with his children. He contracted cancer of the colon and died of that while still living on the farm.
