Nothing creates more excitement and interest at a parade
or patriotic event than well groomed horses and impressive motorcycle units ridden in precise formation by uniformed Special
Deputy Sheriffs.
As part of the Bergen County Sheriffs Office, the Special Mounted Deputy Unit provides the county
with this service. It is available to towns and organizations upon written request to the Sheriff.
Incorporated in 1953 to represent the Sheriff as a ceremonial group, it has since grown and expanded
into an impressive, well trained unit.
The men and women of the Mounted Division are volunteers
and personally bear the expense of their horses and motorcycles, uniforms, equipment and transportation at no expense
to the county. They must be certified by instructors within the unit to participate in public events. All
riders, including their horses and motorcycles alike, are smartly attired in Sheriff’s Office colors and insignia with
special additions denoting their ceremonial unit status. The unit’s appearance is quite memorable to behold.

Both the horse and motorcycle units receive training in first aid and riding techniques
from a national mounted police school as well as county and local instructors. They have appeared in numerous parades, some
of the most prestigious horse shows in the state and compete in the National Police Olympics.
Special training enables this horse and rider to pass
through a competitive obstacle course with ease. These skills will be useful in search/rescue operations.
The horses enjoy "public relations" as much as the Deputies
do.
