1. John Thomas Pomfret, born 25 April 1889, Lower Darwen, Lancashire, England. See
the 1901 Census for Darwen for John Thomas
Pomfret’s family. John and his sister, Margaret and cousin Richard were living
with their grandparents. John’s father, Benjamin, is living with his new
family.
John emigrated to the United
States aboard the SS Ivernia in 1902.
He settled in Cumberland, Valley Falls, RI and lived with his grandparents and
aunts. He worked as a weaver. (See the Rhode
Island Census for 1905 for John and his family. After his grandparents and
siblings went back to England, he moved in with his Aunt, Margaret Eccles, and
her husband David Eccles. According to the 1910 census, he was still a weaver.
His ship manifest states that he said aboard the SS Ivernia and came into Boston on the 20 Apr 1902. He sailed with his Father Thomas and aunt Jane Ann. They had $96 between them, which was a lot of money for travelers to have back then. The family stated that they
were going to stay with Thomas's son Benjamin at 113 Owen Ave., Pawtucket, R.I. He then moved to Taunton, Ma and worked as a dyer in a cotton mill. His 1917 WWI draft card has him listed at 80 Holten St. in Danvers, Ma. and states that he is a Fireman and worked for Consolidated Eleg Bampter? He was married and had one child and had taken out first papers for Nautralization. He moved to Danvers, Ma. to work at the Danvers State Hospital until he
found employment at the United Shoe Machinery Corp in Beverly, Ma., where he
was a cam cutter operator. The family lived on Holten St. in Danvers in Tapleyville across from the Holten St. School. They lived in the same house with the Fish family.
They then purchased a home across from the Danvers Ford. The home was a second mortgage from the previous owner. Ethel wanted to improve the home by updating the plumbing to include an indoor bath.
The person holding the mortgage did not approve, and the Pomfrets defaulted on the mortgage and moved out to Sylvan St. They remained there until James was married and then moved to Bridge St. in Beverly, next door to the Winther family on Virginia Ave. John Thomas died 28 Jul 1971, in Salem, Ma.,
USA. He is buried St Mary's cemetery,
Beverly, Ma.
He married (1) Mary Ethel
Bateson, 19 Nov 1913, in North Dighton, Mass., Mary Ethel was born
10 April 1889, Castlereagh No 1, County Down, Belfast, Ir, Her family lived in Blackburn according to

2.2 Margaret Pomfret b. 1891 in Lower Darwen, Lancashire,
England. There is a record of entry into the United States in 1920 by a
Margaret Pomfret. She came aboard the Cedric and paid her own passage. The
record states that she lived in Lower Darwen and she had visited the United
States in 1906.The document stated that she was 5 feet 4 and ½ inches. She had
moderate hair and her skin was fair. It also stated that she was uncertain if
she wanted to become a US citizen but intended to live here always. She was going
to live with her aunt, Margaret Eccles, 119 Dexter St., Valley Falls, R.I., an
area just outside of Pawtucket. Speculation is that she came to the US after
her remaining aunt, Martha A. Pomfret, in Lower Darwen, passed away in 1919. It
is believed that she did not remain in the US and returned to Darwen, England.
Note: Margaret could have married an
Eccles. There is a Margaret Eccles listed in the SS death index . She was born
11th March 1891 and died Feb 1970. It can’t be her because Margaret
was alive in 1971 when John Thomas died according to dad. A Mary Elizabeth Pomfret was living with the Holden family on 15 Fore St. Lower Darwen in 1911. It is possible that this child born in 1894 was the daughter of Alice (Holden) Pomfret and Benjamin Pomfret. Mary Elizabeth married James Balderstone in 1921 at St. James Church, Lower Darwen.

Benjamin’s marriage (3) was to Susan
(Maiden name unknown was born in Massachusetts, perhaps Fanning) in Cumberland RI. Susan
born in 1881, was of Irish extraction and was married about 1905 in Valley
Falls, Cumberland, RI. They had a son, Benjamin Pomfret who was accidentally
smothered in 1906 at age 5 days, while they were living at 424 High St.
Cumberland, RI. The child was buried in Lincoln, RI. The funeral was at: Christ Church Lonsdale, RI. The family later
moved to Turner Falls, Ma. Here they lived at 31 Third St. in the 1930 census.

Notes: This is what Herbert Taylor had to say about his aunt Peg. My mother’s family consisted of four sisters and one brother; Martha, my mother: Margaret, call Aunt Peg; Jane and Mary Ann and Uncle Tom. They were born in Lower Darwen which was a smaller town than Darwen. My Aunt Peg’s family consisted of the same number as her parents’ family, four sons and one daughter, Jane and one son, Thomas, with whom we played during our early years. My Aunt Peg was a very forcible person which did not contribute to a peaceful atmosphere. She was a very capable person but inclined to dominate her sisters. Her sons were drivers on the railways, Lancashire and North West. In England they use the term “drivers” instead of engineers.
In talking about the move through different houses, he wrote: “third was at the other end of Darwen, nearest Blackburn. My Aunt Peg had two houses at 7 and 9 Moss Fold Road. We had 13 and 15. The houses were built in rows.”

My authority for this statement is the
nonagenarian native of Lower Darwen just referred to,
Mrs. Ellen
Fielding (formerly Ellen Holden), My authority for
this statement is the
nonagenarian native of Lower Darwen just referred to,
Mrs. Ellen
Fielding (formerly Ellen Holden), who now resides at
Daisyfield,
Blackburn. She informs me that she saw the first
2o-spindle bobbin-
wheel that ever came into Darwen or the district, and
wound the first
bobbin on it. She was born at Lower Darwen on April
3oth, 1799, and
in 1801 her parents
went to live at Higher Bog Height, Over Darwen,
next door to a farmer named Richard Holden, They left
Darwen for
Oozehead, Blackburn, before she was seven years of
age, and it was
while they resided at Bog Height that my informant
wound the first
bobbin on the first zo-spindle spinning jenny known
to have come into
Darwen.
The following is a statement I have taken down from her own lips :-Our
folks brought the first twenty-spindle bobbin-wheel
that came into the country, and I
turned the first bobbin on it, It was a thing they had
heard of, and they had been
on the look-out for it, and when my father brought it
from somewhere towards Bolton,
the whole neighbourhood came in to look at it. It had
guiders to gtiide the wheels,
and our folks had to put it in working order with all
the neighbours standing round
watching. It was the first machine of the kind that
had ever come into the neigh-
bourhood or anywhere near, and my father said, “Our
Ellen s’ turn t’ first bobbin on
it.” I was too little to hold the thread, but I turned
the whel, with all the
neighbours standing round watching me. We had not room
for the .looms at Bog
Height, and I was getting old enough to start weaving,
so when I was about seven
years of age our folks removed to Oozehead, Blackburn,
where they had a shop
containing five looms,
Mrs,
Ellen Fielding, a native of Lower Darwen, now over 90
years of age,
says : There were two little straight-up buildings
for spinning built
at LOWer Darwen
when I was about five years old. They
were new buildings and they were used for nothing but
spinning. They
were built Close to
LOwer Darwen HOUSe [Highercroft];’

Hur’croft. The Pomfret’s Messuage (Dwelling house with its adjacent buildings
and land for the use of the household.) was land owned by the Haworth family at
Th’Croft. In 1617, Peter Haworth left his land to his son Richard Haworth. In
his will he states that Pomfret’s messuage is a part of the estate and that all
person with rights to the estate will remain. It is thought that the Pomfret’s
messuage must have been located somewhere around Branch Road. As Thomas Pomfret
is farming land there in 1841. The main
house of Th’Croft was located near Blackburn just outside of the city before
Lower Darwen. The land was probably between Oakenhurst and Blackburn, between
Branch Road and the Roman Road, what is now Higher Croft. Pomfret’s messuage
was about 10 acres. Richard Haworth died without heirs and the land was willed
to the Baron family of Oswaldtwistle. Richard Hindle Esq. Purchased the
