Suspended Sentence in Fatal Mishap

An accident on The Pennsylvania Turnpike New Stanton Interchange which resulted in the death of state trooper Stephen Gyurke, yesterday brought a 6 to 18 months suspended sentence for the driver involved. The victim, who lost both legs in the accident last August 21, is a brother of Trooper William P. Gyurke of the Uniontown barracks. Charles W. Culver, 34, of Bascobel, Wisconsin, formerly of Charles City, Iowa, entered a plea of no defense before Judge L. Alexander Sculco of Greensburg and was given the suspended sentence on an involuntary mansIaughter charge. Culver's truck left the turnpike about 10 miles east of the New Stanton Interchange and struck Trooper Gyurke, who was stationed with the Turnpike Detail at the Somerset barracks. Gyurke was standing on the berm talking to another truck driver he had stopped for an apparent traffic violation. Trooper Gyurke died in Mount Pleasant Hospital shortly after the accident.
