The lands of Baron von Zauberberg lie in the region of Lower Saxony and Holland. Oddly enough, even though Zauberberg means "Magic Mountain" this region is quite flat and devoid of mountains altogether. Aerdigwidder was the last son of an alchemist and sought his own fortune in trade by working on ships of the Hanseatic League.

Though from the Rhennish third of the Diet he was able to invest in an office in Luebeck which allowed him to participate in the profitable Baltic trade in herring, timber, amber, honey, and grain. By serving on cogs out of Luebeck he was able to gain enough profit to be able to invest in shares of several ships and then in cargos spread out over several ships. By some unknown trick of trade or exceptionally good fortune he amassed enough wealth to purchase a Baroncy from the Holy Roman Emperor which included a tower on a river island from whence he was able to secure a chain across to the river banks and charge tolls from the barge traffic. The wealth he gained and the financial support he gave to the Emperor eventually gained him a peerage.

While the source of much of his fortune is not understood many a Baltic sailor who has seen him in the streets of Lubeck has remarked on the close similarity of his appearance to that of the dread pirate Red Fum who has been known to raid the waters near Visby. This Red Fum had one time been a privateer against the Danish, but then became involved with the Vitalian Brotherhood, hunted by such famous captains as Simon van Utrecht. Though the Brotherhood was eventually put down, Red Fum evaded all attempts at capture.

Fum fights with many weapons, but has for years been known as an excellent spearman in battle. Here he stands with the Midrealm army listening to instructions. The time of this picture must be early in Pennsic XI, or before, as Fum is not yet a knight, but some of his armor today is a bit different than this (though he still wears the same breastplate).  Other than a few more lines on his face and a little less hair on his head he, too, looks much the same.

Fum is here pictured coming back into camp early one rainy morning at Pennsic XXIII. Fum was somewhat ill during that war with a very bad chest cold, possibly bronchitis, and thus looks less than happy. He is wearing one of his favorite dalmatics, which he often covered with a shorter black tunic, and sometimes covers with a red alb.

Here Fum is getting ready to go to Midrealm Court at Pennsic in a chariot that Armond had made. If you look you can find Fum standing in the chariot behind his battle standard. His arrival, which was five minutes late, brought the whole court to a standstill. There was another view of the chariot taken by someone in Rimsholt that was used as a model for one of the covers of the Rimsholt Bolt.

This is a photograph of the icon of Saint Fum showing his flaming mountain in the background. The figure in the icon is dressed in the traditional yellow dalmatic and black tunic.

Here is Fum at his last event in Andelcrag. He is wearing his other favorite garb. Other than the fact that he has allowed his beard to grow back this is much the same as he looks today when you see him.

This picture is a rare photo of Captain Red Fum at a tavern with the Morganettes. Captain Fum is reputed to be a fan of Captain Morgan and his fine spiced rum, and on this occasion he had met with Captain Morgan and the Morganettes for the evening. Notice how much Captain Red Fum resembles Baron Sir Fum, even though he is disguised in mundane attire. No wonder people are confused by the similarity.

There are many stories passed down to us by Baron Fum about life in the early days and tales are also told of Saint Fum , the patron saint of Andelcrag and patron saint of monkeyshines.
